But an intoxicating air of romance and historical beauty always pervades this floating city, telling a multitude of happy endings.

For a happy beginning, start your stay at one of Venice’s 4- or 5-star hotels. If you’d like some money in your pocket at the end of the day instead, Venice offers plenty of hostels and other places to stay, too.

The city is built across 117 small islands that offer as many great things to do. Popular attractions include the island of Murano, the Palazzo Ducale, and the Piazza San Marco. That’s where you can see evidence of Venice as the sinking city, as boardwalks sometimes transect the square to lift walkers above knee-high puddles.
