Once an obscure fisherman’s island surrounded by virgin forest, Cancun is now the most well-known Mexican resort in the world, and with its beautiful setting, prime beaches and tropical climate, it’s not hard to see why.
Everything in Cancun caters to the tourist trade, including the large number of eco-tours and adventure tours popular among tourists. The AquaWorld tour company specializes in parasailing, snorkeling and fishing, while outfits like SCUBA Cancun and Nautilus Diving and Training Center help tourists plumb the Caribbean depths. Adventure tours like Hummer Jungle Tours and the Selvatic Canopy Expedition and Adventure are exciting and popular options, and they’ll usually pick up tourists at their hotel.
Whatever its reputation for nightlife (and with hotspots like Coco Bongo, it’s generally good), Cancun makes for a great family vacation. Kid-friendly aquatic hotspots like Xel Ha EcoPark, the Interactive Aquarium and the Dolphinarium on Isla Mujeres even let you swim with dolphins (for an additional fee).
Being a resort city, of course Cancun’s major highlights are its beaches – massive stretches of powdery white sand and gleaming turquoise water. Be sure to pack plenty of sun tan lotion and a few good books, because whether or not you’re staying in a beach front hotel, you’ll be spending a lot of your vacation in the sand and surf.
