Founded in 1608, Vieux Quebec (Old Quebec City) is one of the oldest cities in North America. Its winding streets, lined with cafes and shops, give it a distinctive European feel, as do landmarks like the Notre Dame de Quebec Basilica, and the massive Chateau Frontenac. The old city is separated into two sections: the Haute-Ville (upper town), and the Basse-Ville (lower town), which is connected by the Old Quebec Funicular.

Sightseeing highlights of the area include the Chute-Montmorency (Montmorency Waterfalls), which at 275 feet are even higher than Niagara Falls.

The city’s military history is still evident centuries later, from the Citadel in the 17th century walls surrounding Vieux Quebec, to the 19th century Martello Towers at Battlefields National Park, where the deciding battle of the Seven Years’ War was won by the British. History is also on display at the city’s many museums, and the Musee National des Beaux-Art du Quebec, and the Musee de la Civilization are not to be missed. Neither are the city’s many bars and restaurants.
