The Great American Road Trip Week 2: The Mid-Atlantic

If you're looking for a slice of true America, the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States is a great road trip. On the second leg of our journey across the country, we ogled our members' photos that showed the best that the East Coast has to offer. Colonial Philly, fast-paced New York, and the hundreds of miles of highway through the countryside and past the beaches showed us the true side of the Atlantic.

The photos we chose for week two truly represent the history of America, as does this region of the states. The polarity of the megacities and the quaint Quaker countryside prove to be a phenomenal place to road trip. And a plethora of Americana attractions as well as pure natural beauty make our second week of the road trip just as memorable as the first.

New York
The Empire State truly embodies the mindset of an empire- with the towering skyscrapers of New York City and the beauty of the Catskill and Adirondack Mountains. Our members' have captured this mindset to a 't'- with the Statue of Liberty, an icon of American freedom, towering over the mouth of the Hudson River, and the wondrous Niagara Falls rushing over the US border.

Pennsylvania
Crossing South into The Keystone State lets our minds go back in time to the early days of the states. While Pennsylvania boasts hundreds and hundreds of acres of Dutch country (providing some amazing countryside photo-ops) the cities reflect even older times. Independence Hall- a key meeting place for the birth of our nation, is not to be missed.

New Jersey
Beaches, boardwalks and 'burbs are probably the forethought of The Garden State. With the bronzed bodies of the shores, the accessibility to big cities, and, yes, gardens (New Jersey tomatoes are delicious!) New Jersey offers the road tripper thousand of ideas when it comes to roadside stops. You can't beat the colorful streets of Atlantic City of the serenity of the beaches like Wildwood.

Delaware
It may be small, but packs a big American punch! The First State gives us a history lesson of America; the mansions and gardens at Winterthur are loaded with everything you can imagine Americana, and since it is so small, you can hop over the road to Bethany Beach afterwards to take full advantage of the summer weather.

Maryland
Coastal Maryland- with crab and sailboats abound, The Free State is a coastal getaway. While it doesn't take long to cross this state by car, there are plenty of photo ops that out members' have taken full advantage of. The Lightship Chesapeake moored in the Baltimore Harbor is a popular sight to see, and you can't beat one of the best sunsets in the country at Breton Bay.

Washington D.C
The district has been America's capital since 1790, and if there is anywhere to experience this country its here. With white-marbled monuments and memorials dotting the city, it is hard to pick which place to see first. The Washington Monument is an iconic obelisk jutting into the sky, and the White House is truly an American aspiration.
