Your humble editor was in the city of Sin last week at a relatively new property, the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. On the south end of the strip near City Center, this approximately 3,000-room hotel really knocked our socks off. Here’s why:
- Excellent food and beverage program. Beyond the expansive and well-priced breakfast buffet ($16, which is a few dollars cheaper than competitors at the Wynn or Bellagio) and satellite restaurants by Scott Conant and Jose Andres, the cocktails at Comme Ca and the Vesper bar are easily the best on the Strip. Real Vegas aficionados know that they have to hit the Downtown Cocktail Room for quality drinks, and many of the bartenders here are alums of that program.
- Design. The Cosmo started as a condo project, so the rooms are much bigger than a typical hotel and include kitchenettes and terraces. Overall, the design is grandiose but on the right side of tacky, down to the dripping chandelier motif and glowing columns of books near the check-in.
- Location. The south strip is the new north strip, with the addition of CityCenter (Aria, the Mandarin Oriental Las Vegas) and the quality spas and restaurants there. It’s up to Wynn and Encore to return serve at this point.
All in all, worth checking out, unless sports gambling is your plan -- the Cosmo’s sports book is, like the Grinch’s heart, three sizes too small.

What the Cosmo lacks in sports book, it makes up for in soaking tub. Glorious, shoulder-deep soaking tub.
