Quote: I had such a good time during my six days in the Netherlands and saw so much that this awesome Northern European nation needs a second journal by me. Enjoy Scheveningen, Kasteel de Haar and the Airborne Museum at Arnhem/Oosterbeek.

As of September 1944, The Netherlands had been occupied by German forces for almost 4 1/2 years. During this time most of its Jewish population had been deported to Westerbork in the eastern part of the country and eventually to the death camps at Auschwitz or Sobibor in Poland. The other citizens of the Netherlands also endured starvation, its men being sent to forced labor in Germany and other deprivation in the 4 1/2 years of occupation and some people had joined the Resistance in hopes of weakening the German occupation. The Dutch people also hoped the Allies would liberate the Netherlands, and as of June 1944, there seemed to be light at the end of the tunnel when the Allies landed at Normandy...Read More

"On the last day that we went to school, the German soldiers gave us English chocolates: They had taken it from the English supply baskets after they had been dropped in the wrong places, right into German hands."--G. Jensen, Dutch resident of the town of Doorwerth, The Netherlands during WWII.Whenever I take a vacation to Europe, I always make the effort to visit at least one World War II sight while I am there. This trip around from April-May 2011 was the Airborne Museum at Hotel Hartenstein near Arnhem, The Netherlands. The history of the Netherlands during this trying and horrible time has been a fascination for me and one of my favorite movies is A ...Read More

May 2 was my second to last full day of visiting my friend Monique in the Netherlands. We planned on going to Arnhem to tour the Airbourne Museum in nearby Oosterbeek, but her daughter Manouk was not feeling well and Monique felt it would be better to postpone that trip until May 3 and go to Kasteel de Haar, which is closer to her home in Vianen and would allow Manouk to stay home in bed and rest while Monique, her youngest daughter Jiska, and I went to the village of Haarzuillens near Utrecht to tour Kasteel de Haar.It was a short trip through some of The Netherlands most peaceful and beautiful farmlands for us to get to Kasteel de Haar, and once we entered the village of Haarz...Read More

One of the main reasons Monique, Piet, Manouk, Jiska and I came to Scheveningen was to tour Sea Life, an aquarium that has locations in several cities in Europe including Birmingham, England and now a new location on the Esplanade in Scheveningen. I was looking forward to seeing the displays of sea creatures from around the world and seeing some old friends from my time in Alaska last year, otters in a new exhibit at Sea Life.It was crowded in Sea Life the Sunday we all visited Sea Life Scheveningen, and there were a lot of people with little toddlers and babies in strollers along with Jiska in her wheelchair. This made touring Sea Life a pain in the butt when you wanted to see...Read More

The last two times I have visited the Netherlands, I have not had much difficulty communicating with my friend Monique or other natives because several inhabitants of the Netherlands speak English as their second language. But whenever I am in a foreign country, I do try to pick up a few words of the native language to communicate with the natives and not look like an ugly American. Monique knows that I am willing to try a few Dutch words, but she makes sure I don't pull a muscle in my tongue in the process. When she and Piet told me that we were visiting the beach resort town of Scheveningen on the North Sea the Sunday after my birthday, I pronounced the name of the town with the "sch" as in the w...Read More
