The Highs and Waterlow of Highgate

A travel journal to London by sararevell

Quote: Highgate Village, perched on a North London hill is very different from the London that most tourists see. It boasts some great pubs, a famous cemetery and the pretty Waterlow Park. The green open spaces and wooded areas make it ideal for families and dog walkers alike.

Highgate is pretty easy to get to from central London. Located east of Hampstead village and just north of Kentish Town and Tufnell Park, visitors can take the Northern Line tube (High Barnet branch) to either Archway or Highgate and be within a 10-15 minute walk of Highgate Village. One of the biggest draws is Highgate Cemetery and despite the station names, Archway is actually the closest tube station. Waterlow Park adjoins the cemetery and there are maps at the park entrances. If you prefer to alight at Highgate however, you will want to head up Southwood Lane or Jackson Lanes (which joins Southwood Lane) and then continue down Highgate High Street to Waterlow Park. By bus, ...Read More

Places to Visit

Quote:
Like its close neighbour Hampstead, Highgate was once a village quite separate from London. Although the tube network and urban sprawl have now linked it with the city below, there are many historic features that have been protected to help retain Highgate’s villagey feel. It is one of the few places in London to have woodland as well as open park areas. Queens Wood and Highgate Wood are both located close to the tube station and used to be part of the larger Forest of Middlesex and at one time came under the Bishop of London’s hunting estate. The Bishop was also responsible for installing a tollgate at the top of the hill to collect fees from travellers passing through his land and into L...Read More

Highgate Cemetery Best of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Life and Death on Highgate Hill"

Quote:
One of Highgate’s biggest attractions is its beautiful Victorian cemetery where some 53,000 graves are spread over 37 acres of leafy land. It opened in 1839 during the reign of Queen Victoria and is split into ‘East’ and ‘West’ sides. It is still a working cemetery and is home to some distinguished people. The East Cemetery is the more accessible of the two. There is a small, cash-only, entry fee (£3 per adult as of mid-2011) and visitors can roam around at will. A map is available to purchase to help visitors locate the graves of likes of Douglas Adams and George Eliot although the lack of detail on the map is quite incredible and doesn’t necessarily make it easier to find who you’re looki...Read More

Kenwood House Best of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Art, Music and Room to Roam"

Quote:
NB. Kenwood House will be closed to the public from Winter 2011 – Summer 2013 for repairs and restoration.Overlooking a small patch on the north side of Hampstead Heath is the well-worn and well-loved Kenwood House. Operated by English Heritage, entry to Kenwood House is free to the public and the house and grounds offer a full day out for adults and children. Compared to many stately homes, Kenwood is modest in size but houses its own art collection and boasts a Rembrandt self-portrait. Built in the early 17th century, architect Robert Adam was charged with remodeling Kenwood in the 1700s. Shortly after, George Saunders added two wings plus offices, kitchen buildings and brewe...Read More

Parkland Walk, Local Nature Reserve Best of IgoUgo

Hotel | "The Parkland Walk "

Quote:
Away from the city smoke and noise is a leafy trail that runs through Crouch End. This gentle four-mile walk is ideal for children, dog walkers and railway aficionados. The north of London is blessed with green, open spaces. Hampstead Heath is one of the largest in the city and further north and east are Waterlow Park and Queens Wood in Highgate. London may be better known for its parks but there are also many public footpaths worth investigating. One such trail is the Parkland Walk, a 4.5 mile / 7.2km track that runs between Finsbury Park and Highgate. A final stretch continues on to Alexandra Palace and its park for far-reaching views over London. The trail is a nature reserve...Read More

Waterlow Park (Lauderdale House) Best of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Waterlow Park & Lauderdale House"

Quote:
A brisk walk up Highgate Hill from Archway tube will eventually lead you to the lovely Waterlow Park, which provides the southern bookend to Highgate High Street. Rather bizarrely, Waterlow Park doesn’t show up on Google Maps and while it is tiny compared to neighbouring Hampstead Heath, it is definitely significant enough to be marked on a map. There are three ponds in the park, all fed by natural springs. It is the abundance of water, clean air and far-reaching views that has attracted Highgate’s predominantly wealthy residents both past and present. At the top of the park, the Earl of Lauderdale resided in a house that now bears his name and the house and adjoining terraced g...Read More

The Angel Inn Best of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "A Questionable Special Offer for Food and Wine"

Quote:
The Angel Inn is located not too far from where we live but this was our first time trying their food menu. We decided to redeem a £20 voucher, which entitled us to two main courses and a bottle of red or white wine.We arrived around 6pm on a Friday night and already The Angel was busy with noisy after-work drinkers ready to celebrate the weekend. We moved away from one particularly vocal crowd, leaving a sunken sofa for a small table surrounded by about fifteen chairs. After some furniture rearranging we sat down to enjoy our merlot-cabernet blend (the white option was Chardonnay). It is difficult to describe The Angel Inn. To be honest, I actually quite like the place, I’m ju...Read More

Capri Ristorante Pizzeria Best of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "An Italian Tragedy in Highgate"

Quote:
If you do an online search for the Capri restaurant on Archway Road, you will find plenty of glowing reviews. Archway Road is a fairly dreary and unattractive highway so any proprietor setting up shop along it is in for a challenge. However it is my understanding that Capri has existed for a number of years now and has a loyal following. The restaurant is small and its walls are decorated with an assortment of Fiat 500 trinkets and a mishmash of posters, postcards and banknotes. Directly opposite the tiny serving area are two posters of Pamela Anderson. In one she’s wearing some sort of see-through garment, which made me worry a little about the focus of the person preparing and serving th...Read More

Cote Highgate Best of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "French Fare on the Hill"

Quote:
Although I do lament the fact that lovely Highgate village is now a procession of chain coffee shops and restaurants, I have to admit that I wasn’t wholly disappointed when Cote opened a branch at the end of Highgate High Street. I would give anything to see a row of quaint independent teashops, bars and restaurants but when all else fails, Cote is definitely not a bad place to have on your doorstep.I have been to the Highgate restaurant twice now and both times have left 100% satisfied. The dinner special is hard to beat: either 1/2 roast chicken or Steak-Frites. I again opted for the steak and my husband had the chicken. The one thing lacking at Cote is that they don’t offer pichets of w...Read More

The Flask Best of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "A Pub for All Seasons"

Quote:
While Highgate is a fairly quiet neighbourhood for most of the year round, it seems that on a sunny day, half the world descends on The Flask pub. With a large courtyard and plenty of outdoor tables, their beer garden is a coveted space when the sun comes out. The pub’s handsome brick façade, decorated with colourful flower boxes belies its murky past. Dating from the 17th century, the Flask is young compared to some of its Hampstead neighbours but legend has it that Dick Turpin stopped in on occasion, presumably shortly before or after paying a visit the Spaniards Inn a mile and a half down the road. The Flask is also reported to have its own resident ghost and while her identity remains ...Read More

The Red Lion and Sun Pub Best of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Real Ales and Hog Roasts on Request"

Quote:
About a five minute walk from The Flask is the Red Lion and Sun. This place has a little bit of everything. In the winter there is a log fire, in the summer there are front and rear beer gardens. For geeks there is free WiFi and for animal lovers, dogs are welcome. The Red Lion and Sun serves real ales, including a rotating guest ale and during the summer they offer spit roast barbecues, even cooking entire hog roasts to order. It is a long, Elizabethan-style pub where you will usually find a handful of locals debating life’s serious issues at the bar near the front of the pub and a larger scattering of guests from near and far at one of their many dining tables that stretch out to the bac...Read More
