I stayed at this hotel for my second lowest rate i have ever got in Vegas, a mere $22 dollars a night. Check in went ok, Golden Gate is right at the top of Freemont Street and the Plaza hotel stares at it across the road. Freemont street is a great experience and despite what hotel you stay at whether it be the plush Golden Nugget or the cheaper hotels like this one, you can always walk out onto Freemont street and enjoy the illuminations, shows and music free of charge.

The hotel room was good with neutrogena shampoo and a flat screen television. It also had good furnishings and the much needed soda machines with ice outside. The machines also vend at cheaper rates than that of the plush strip hotels. The downside was that the bathroom was quite small and the room had a view of a vacant road towards the back. Also internet costs over $12 a night, but if you take your laptop to Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks you can sit for half an hour and check your emails.

The staff were nice and the casino was small but good. I cant remember seeing a sports book or a casino lounge. It is said to be a historic hotel and has some pictures of the Rat Pack and other vintage celebrities. I will recommend their cafe/snack bar style restuarant. The staff were nice and the food was good and cheap. It serves burgers and chips, not so much good cuisine but at the prices you pay it was hearty and worth paying for. I tipped the restuarant's waitresses who were very nice servers.

Rather than hang round the hotel I would book in and walk around the other casinos in Freemont street. The area also has a lot of shops nearby, with a great Walgreens selling cheap water and essentials. There are also a lot of cheap souveneir shops. The Freemont street experience can also be got by staying at this hotel. If i came back i would ask for a front of street room and look out at the experience, but staff tell me that you would need a lower level room for that.

All in all a good catch, you get what you pay for. Do not expect pure luxury but it is safe and nice environment and great to save a bit of cash. I would return.

I was very disappointed with El Cortez hotel and casino. I was pointed by a friend to visit the hotel first to make my mind up as i may not like it.

Firstly the area was questionable, it is just off Freemont street and would seem safe enough to walk to, providing you go the main pedestrian way. At the bottom of Freemont street we crossed the road where the MTA buses assemble and got to El Cortez and got inside. There were police cars a block or so away and a group of what seemed like crack addicts/ alcoholics that we could see from the hotel, but as we got to the door the security was there and it didnt feel unsafe inside.

We went in a group of 4 people, 3 americans and me being Irish. I went on a slot machine and won $50 and i then joined my friends in the Keno lounge. This is where the problems started. The Keno teller was Korean, she was very sharp, unfriendly and didnt conversate or welcome us like other keno tellers do. Then the drinks waitress came along so we asked for a drink. She then asked us for our ticket. We looked at each other puzzled what ticket did she mean, apparently when playing keno they give a drinks ticket out after spending $8. We went back to the teller who screamed "No $8 no drink". My friend is a businessman who spends a lot on keno and he explained that he had spent $50 already but the woman kept screaming. This got to my friend who shouted in retaliation. Needless to say we got up and left the keno lounge. This is a really absurd rule, even in Caesars Palace we didnt get drink tickets for a minimum stake.

I can only assume that this casino caters towards people who are even outside the downtown normal class. They treated us like we were criminals and screamed at us. Needless to say i wont be back. Read Less

Binion's Gambling Hall and Hotel

The slots are quite good as they seem a lot looser than those machines on the Strip, most of which tend to swallow up your money. Binions have a great steakhouse and if you go early evening you can get a steak dinner for $8 or less, they also do lobster deals, i have never seen such normally expensive food go so cheap. They also do a really cheap burger and fries deal in another cafe styled restuarant on the ground floor for around $3.99. The beauty about Downtown Vegas is that you wont have to spend a lot on food.

The hotel itself is quite dated. I got a room for $40 by phoning the hotel direct. This isnt such a good deal as you can get others in the area even cheaper than that. The room was in need of reinvating and the furnishings looked worn and dated. Luckily i was only here for an overnight stay, before trouncing off to the plush Golden nugget which was only across the road. There were the standard ice machines and soda dispensers in the corridor. Some of the rooms were noisy i could hear what was going on in the next room. Although not a pleasant experience it was clean and i checked out the next day.

All in all i would say that i would recommend the casino, but not the hotel. One bad thing though about the casino's sports book, it had very rude staff that demanded that set the odds at a $3 minimum bet and were not polite at all. I have been able to bet for triffectas cheaper on the strip and with far better manners.

My own personal opinion is to have a visit to the casino and see for yourself, but not the hotel. I also notice that a lot of the reputable hotel booking sites do not offer Binions as an option, i can only guess why. Read Less

This hotel is amazing, so huge and historic, having been featured in many Hollywood films. The Golden Nugget has a massive casino that is split into several parts. I entered from the Freemont street entrance and walked a long but interesting walk through to the check in desk. The floors are marble and polished and you can tell by the furnishings that it is well maintained. As i walked along i passed the pool which looked beautiful, pictures and mirrors hung from the walls and it was quite crowded.

When i arrived at the check in desk the staff were courteous and helpful. Check in was quite quick and they reminded me of the express checkout which i later made avail of. I was ushered to my room going by a lift that seemed personal tailored. I then walked along the corridor which had the typical ice machines and soda and snack dispensers.

I turned my click card into my room and thought i had died and gone to heaven. The room was beautiful and modern. There was a large vanity area and mirrors and a LCD television. The shower area was great and there were some really expensive designer shampoos and soaps which i took home when finished. To top it all off when i opened the dresser there was a logo-ed bathrobe which was heaven to wear. The hotel allow you to purchase it but it costs around $100, it may be good but not that good. I also had slippers which are great to walk around in. On my first night at the Golden Nugget i was so tired that i lay in bed and fell asleep. The bed whatever it was made of was perfect, it seemed to have special foam that just arched into your back and having a king sized bed i fell asleep.

I got up the next day and went to their casino. I will give a tip and say i wouldnt rush back to their slots they seem to be tighter than a vice. The hotel along with its luxuriousness also seems to have higher stakes in their table games. It does has a great sports book area which you can bet as much or as little as you want. I do trifectas which have a $2 minimum standard stake in Vegas.

There are some restuarants but quite expensive. I went to their buffet which was included in the deal. I would recommend going for brunch and you should therefore not need to eat much that day. It also has a nightclub which has a balcony onto Freemont street, but it seemed to be geared towards 20 to 30 year olds.

The Golden Nugget is the creme de la creme of Downtown Las Vegas and would easily win against at least half of the strip hotels. I really got the VIP treatment there. Well recommended. Read Less

As a regular visitor to Las Vegas, even though i live in Northern Ireland, I am constantly planning my next trip to Vegas and searching all the cheap hotel deals. I love the strip and the glitz and the glamour but that often comes at a price and I have taken the downtown experience and that is equally good.

I was recommended Fitzgeralds as a great hotel to stay in, having heard that some of the others in the area are a bit dingy. I came to the hotel from the Stratosphere by cab (around a 12 dollar journey) and was transported to the parking lot area outside the hotel. I took a quick walk through part of the casino and dragged my cases to the reception area. I had a short wait before I got to speak to the check in clerk. She welcomed me and as it was my birthday, I took my chances and showed my passport and said "Look its actually my birthday can I get a free upgrade?" Dont underestimate what you think is rudeness in Vegas, they take requests very seriously if you want to check into their hotel and spend lots of money in their casino. The lady said that if i was prepared to wait 2 hours she would sort me out with a great room with a great view. I agreed and left my cases with the baggage attendant and went off into their casino.

The casino was great all the slots seem quite loose, some are old fashioned in which they pay you in coins. I won $100 and found it a bit embarressing to sit for what seemed like hours and with what felt like half the casino looking at me. I took a bucket for the first time and got them converted. Well i didnt want to be carrying around all them coins.

I took a coffee and a snack in Dunkin Donuts which is right at the front of the hotel, also there is a McDonalds. Downtown caters more towards blue collar workers and i dont see a problem with that as you can get a cheap snack and breakfast. I went to the hotel desk a couple of hours later and was told to go to the 10th floor. My room was at the very end and when i entered i was stunned. What a beautiful birthday present, the view was amazing, it showed the strip and the Stratosphere tower and part of downtown. Also it was shaped like a lighthouse, a massive room which encircled so that you could look out at downtown and also the strip. Good going considering i got this all for $30 a night.

The hotel has a great keno lounge where i also won money. It also has a fantastic restuarant doing steak dinners for less than $10 and i couldnt finish the food although it was delicious, great Texan sized portions. Also a good tip is if you have a drink, unlike the strip, you wont be getting a watered down version, its very strong, so expect to feel a little tipsy after a few drinks.

I had the most comfortable sleep in that room. You also have to experience the Freemont street experience. Without a doubt i will definitely return. Read Less
