Snorkeling the Cancun Beaches

Snorkeling the beaches in Cancun was disappointing at best. We have snorkeled all over and were excited about it, but the huge waves every day kind of quashed our hopes. On only one day was the water calm enough to snorkel. We had 4 days of “red flag” water where we weren't allowed to swim. A huge undertow and swirling sand really made even swimming difficult. Large chunks of coral imbedded in the sand bloodied our knees after we were slammed around a couple of times. Save the snorkeling for Cozumel.

Snorkeling at Xpu-Ha
While at Xpu-Ha Palace, you can swim and snorkel in their lagoon. I would recommend this for children and beginning snorkelers because it is on the beach in a lagoon and the water is calm. You can use their snorkel gear free of charge for one hour, or use your own as long as you would like. There were not a lot of fish to see, but it was an inexpensive way to have fun.

Definitely some of the best snorkeling on the Mayan Riveria. Accessible from the beach. No need to take a boat with a bunch of other tourists. Three different places: Akumal Bay, Half-Moon Bay, and the park at the end of the town. No crowds, excellent visibility, lots of fish, clean, safe.

You'll all kinds of very beautiful fish and sea creatures. This was my favorite part of the vacation. It was very easy to take pictures and enjoy the nice water.

Isla Mujeres is a beautiful island in Mexico. I took a day trip that included sailing to the island with live music/dancing, free drinks, shopping, and snorkeling. There are also many other activities and rentals here if one desires. Beautiful island and great snorekling area (tons of fish). Great shopping deals too!
