Anglers will delight at the host of sport fishing opportunities in Nicaragua. Flyfishing the Salt– the region where the fresh waters of the Rio San Juan meet the ocean – is a great way to catch huge freshwater tarpon, drawn by massive schools of baitfish that flock here. Outfits like San Carlos Sport Fishing will help take you add truth to your fish tales with catches like giant tarpon, marlin, dorado, sailfish and snook. Sunning, swimming and surfing abound at Popoyo Beach, one of Nicaragua’s many sandy idylls. The dark, volcanic sands at Laguna de Apoyo, a 700-foot-deep crater lake atop the Volcano Apoyo, make for a perfect way to reward yourself after a long hike. And for the more adventurous type, there’s Monkey Island, the most famous island in Lake Nicaragua’s Granada Islets. Capuchin monkeys flock to the water’s edge at the sound of approaching boats, hoping for a handout. But be careful – these critters bite!

Anyone looking to work off some energy will love a visit to Somoto, where the newly discovered Somoto Canyon winds for five miles through cliffs more than 400 ft tall. The famous town of El Castillo makes for an easier day trip.
