Weekend in Vermont: Stoweflake Resort Balloon Fest

It’s not often that a resort’s president pilots guests around in hot-air balloons, but that’s just one of the high-flying summer activities at Stoweflake Mountain Resort & Spa in Stowe, Vermont. The fun peaks each July with the Stoweflake Hot-Air Balloon Festival, and this weekend marks the event’s 23rd anniversary.

For a last-minute balloon-watching excursion, happyclam says to “get there early and park near the golf course--they'll all go right overhead.” He also advises, “Later, get out into the countryside, drive along some of the rural dirt roads. There are beautiful wildflower meadows all over and lovely views.”

He brings up a good point: there’s no shortage of summer attractions in this ski town. Cool off and fill up on a tour of the Ben & Jerry’s Factory (yes, employees really do get to bring home free pints) and ride a gondola up Mount Mansfield (summer bonus: you can take it down, too!). Then head downtown for some New England souvenirs and visit the Trapp Family Lodge for a Sound of Music fix, stateside.

There are still weekend rooms available at Stoweflake and other Stowe hotels if you’re looking for a late deal--and if you’re more of an early bird, there’s always next year.

It's quite refreshing to see the spots with the perfect site. This area seems to be a good resting place.
