Germany is the place to be during the Christmas season. The Germans are really a big fan of Christmas and they decorate their town to the fullest. While most towns are focused on Christmas shopping, in Germany the focus is more on wonderful Christmas markets with great atmosphere. This year we were at the Cologne Christmas market.
Cologne is one of our favorite towns to be as it’s a large city with all the great shops, nightlife and cultural opportunities; it still feels like a small town at the same time. The city center is relatively small which means you can almost walk to everything. The people are really nice and there is overall just a very good atmosphere.
During the Christmas season I would really recommend coming here. The Christmas market normally starts around the end of November and goes until Christmas. The whole town gets decorated but of course the city center is the place to be. They put up the large Christmas tree and decorate the streets to the fullest but the main attraction is the Christmas market.
The Christmas market can be found at the main square right near the large cathedral. From afar you will hear the music and smell the great food. The market consists of little stalls were you can buy great food from typical German food as bratwurst to food as fish. There is also a lot of different kind of drinks you can try as just the typical hot chocolate but also alcoholic drinks. The other stalls are full with Christmas related objects that are just fun to watch.
The Christmas market covers the entire square and you can easily spend here the whole evening. At night all the little lights go on making it a truly magical place. Friendly people, great food and drinks! Really a place to be! Five stars.
