A May 2006 trip to New York by harrka

Roosevelt HotelBest of IgoUgo

Hotel | "The Roosevelt"

Quote: A gorgeous lobby and great location, but the rooms were a little small and the concierge was not very helpful.

Booking on the Internet, I expected a small room, and as we booked for one and two stayed, we had the smaller end of the range! Oh well. We were impressed that the Internet pictures did not give the hotel justice—in the good way and were pleasantly surprised at the nice employees and the state of the hotel.

The bath was a little small as well, but we didn't stay in the room too much!

Gene's Coffee ShopBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Quote: After sticker shock in Times Square (NYC does have some of the biggest portions I've ever seen!), this place was a steal for a quick bite/fuel up for a walk through Central Park.

Stop in and say hi to Gene, and the friendliest wait staff I've ever met in my entire life!!! Even on mother's day!!!

Restaurant | "Roxy"

Quote: Roxy--historical, memorable, can't miss!!!

After seeing a bit on TV on our first morning in town (good thing he wanted to check the weather), we found out that Roxy was a diner with big food and great dessert. We had to check it out for ourselves. The portions are huge and the prices match, but when you're on vacation, you gotta do what the local (tourists) do... quarters are tight, but comfy. Spend the $5 sharing charge if you can't take it with... because you won't finish it!

Restaurant

Quote: Great little outdoor cafe spot right behind the NY Public Library—great view in terms of architecture and the people. Best outdoor place to eat within spitting distance of Times Square...

Top of the RockBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Rockefeller center/top; of the rock"

Quote: The "top of the rock" is great... a little expensive, but the views are great—Central Park, Empire State Building, and great skyline shots. A little on the expensive side, and if you have a lot of time, read the signs and watch the movie. In a pinch, go straight to the top!

Rent (The Show)Best of IgoUgo

Attraction | "RENT"

Quote: RENT is the musical/theatre for young people. I rarely like live music and don't like many shows (I keep trying by seeing new things, but it's always a waste!). However, after seeing Rent in Chicago, once I happened upon it in NYC, i went in directly and bought tickets for that evening's performance. It was as good as ever. and even for last minute bookings, we got front row/center for the mezz level--great view of the stage!!!

Central ParkBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

Quote: Central Park is fabulous. You can't see everything unless you have a couple of days. It is 50 streets long and 5 blocks wide. With so many sights to see along the way, take your time or go back again. The zoo is a bit tiny for the price, but it's all for a good cause and cute, unusual animals are inside (and polar bears!).

Wear comfy shoes and stay close by so you can go back.

Eammon's Bar & GrillBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Eammon's"

Quote: Great pre-dinner spot for a drink or a short night cap. All employees are bonafide Irish... with the accent and all. Great food, great prices, great selection of libations. Sadly, no jaeger bombs

Brooklyn BridgeBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

Quote: It's a 45-minute walk across, but the pictures and views are great. I think it's what made me fall in love with NYC! I had to buy an I love NY sweatshirt after the walk!

If you only want to go one direction, take the subway into Brooklyn and walk towards the city. The view is better! Watch out for bicyclists and stay to the left of the yellow line. The bikers come fast and furious--and in my opinion aren't biking responsibly for their safety and others... you need a helmet to walk across.

Convenient water station on the way across, this guy was probably not licensed but it was tempting to buy a water for $1 (only!!!).

Do it; you won't be sorry!
