USS Midway Museum

The USS Midway is an aircraft carrier that was decommissioned over 15 years ago. It is now a floating museum in San Diego. It gives visitors an excellent insight on how it was to live and work on the huge ship. The first thing you do after entering is to receive your self-guided audio tour. This tour will bring you descriptions and commentary on about 50 different stops. There are 21 restored aircraft atop the ship on the flight deck. Parking is right next to it on the navy pier. There are several flight simulators as well as a gift shop.

It was neat to take in all that goes on during maritime operation. The tour will take you from the one end of the ship to the other. It may, however, be hard for people with disabilities to navigate it as there are many steep stairways and tight hallways. I would still recommend everyone to check out this museum as they still have sections for handicapped access. The tour will take three to four hours, depending on your pace. I have been there twice and both times were well worth the price.

Prices for admission:
Adults- $15
Seniors(62+)- $10
Students(With ID)- $10
Military(With ID)- $10
Youth(6-17)- $8
Children(5 and under)- Free
Active duty military in uniform- Free

More of the ship was opened up since my first visit, and it is still being restored. It is a great trip whether you are a military buff or not.

If you get a chance, you need to tour the USS Midway. This was at one time the largest naval ship in the world. For only $15 you get a self-guided tour with headphones and get to explore the ship for about 3 1/2 hours. You get to tour the flight deck as well, which was my favorite part of the ship. You will learn everything there is to know about this ship and get an idea of what it is like to be out at sea with the Navy. They also have a very nice gift shop and cafe.
This is a must-see for anyone who is into military history.

The Museum is housed in the USS Midway and a walking tour with headphones, a tape deck and map takes you from station to station. Each station is identified with a number that corresponds to a number on the map and on your tape deck. Press the button and hear an informative, entertaining presentation. Many of the personnel throughout the museum are retired navy officers whose are happy to share their personal experiences of the time when the Midway was in operation.

Our tour of the bridge was given by one of Midway’s retired flight deck captains. His harrowing personal stories made history come alive for us. There is an express tour of 1 ½ hours or an extended 2 1/2-hour tour. The map you follow has coupons for small discounts at other area attractions.
