- Antigua was founded in 1543, made the capital in 1550, damaged by an earthquake in 1565, rebuilt, damaged by another quake in 1577, rebuilt over and over again (in 1586, 1607, 1651, 1681, 1684, 1717, and 1751), and in 1773, was officially abandoned. Many beautiful, broken buildings remain.

Of the numerous museums in Antigua, we visited a handful, including the old book museum, the coffee museum, two textile museums, a music museum, a colonial home, and the Museo de Santiago.

- In Part 6 of 7 of our month-long journey around Guatemala, we find the bright colors and interesting architecture of old Guatemala to more than make up for the overwhelming tourist population. Visiting museums and churches contrast sharply with our grueling climb of Volcano Pacaya.

- La Antigua Guatemala has quite a selection of restaurants. Of all the restaurants we visited, only one had been recommended, but all were good. We were either lucky or Antigua has outstanding, but not necessarily fancy, food. The beef was particularly good.

- The last stop in a grimy, nerve-wracking 5-city business trip in Latin American, Antigua de Guatemala, tucked in a mountain valley, and with it's restored colonial buildings and evening safety, seemed like a pueblo dropped from the sky. It is a pearl, appreciated by natives, expats and visitors alike.
