Most of us get through the day in a small number of functional buildings -- apartment complexes, houses, offices and favorite groceries. A good number of architects pay down their mortgages with designs for everyday places. But what about wilder structures? Everyone knows about the Guggenheim in Bilbao, but what else can a traveler find if they search around with a camera? Two of our best photographers took pictures that answer this question. Our Photos of the Week are dotted with extra parapets.
The cathedral in Chester isn't the grandest, as cathedrals go -- but the soot-black color of its walls and and the jut of its spiky watchtowers give it an air that’s more than a little Hogwarts. Seeing this, debmercury captured the cathedral in all its isometric glory. You make the ominous look so inviting, deb.
Las Vegas is best known as the American capital of the wacky, which explains why many of its streets appear to have been designed by kindergarteners. When wasa girl paid a visit to the city, she foregrounded the Statue of Liberty in a photo of the distantskyline. If you’re trying to teach someone geography, wasa, we suggest you not start with this picture.
