This was an awesome hostel, it was inexpensive, clean and helpful, with friendly staff. It's located in the city bowl suburbs and not too far from Long Street where all the bars and nightlife are located. Me and four friends booked a night stay before heading out on our long drive to Jeffrey's Bay the next day. They also have an excellent happy hour as well. Our rooms were located around the corner on quieter Union Street. Here's their website www.ashanti.co.za/index_ashanti_lodge.htm

Ashanti Backpacker Lodge has an excellent vibe. I have spent nights in hostels around the world, but few that have the setting of this characterful old Victorian-styled lodge. The Ashanti Lodge is conveniently situated in the centre of the City Bowl of the Mother City, Cape Town. The lodge has security and the convenience of stumbling down the road to where you can find pubs scattered throughout Long Street. A travel centre is situated within the hostel and is one of the most professional around. For travel and excursions, you can have these right at your door with little worry about them actually ripping you off, because I can vouch for them as actually being a very good value for the money. I have nothing but good things to say about the place--the pub was excellent and the party atmosphere and the huge verandas made my stay comfortable and very memorable. I'm pretty sure they are the best in Cape Town, and I have tried one or two other hostels and still think Ashanti is the best.

Spacious dorms, great lush garden, and friendly staff. In the middle of the Garden's Suburb, around the corner from restaurant scattered Kloof Street, which flows over into Long Street (famous for its nightlife).
