Petunia's

I tagged this restaurant as serving American, but not in the "burgers and fries" sense. Petunias serves a lovely blend of Cajun, Creole, and French - just what you'd expect in New Orleans.

Petunia's is in a pink, three story building on St. Louis Street, and was about a block from our hotel. We were out early, and were the first customers of the day at 9:00. (We actually waited a minute or two in the street for the waiter to unlock the door.)

The building is old, with a narrow entry way, high ceilings, and what either original or well-interpreted fireplaces. No need to run them the day we were there - the ceiling fans were already spinning. The waitstaff was friendly, the service was casual, and the food was delicious! I had eggs and sausage - sounds boring, but it came with cheesy hash browns and two kinds of sausage - andouille and boudin. The boudin was the best sausage I have ever had. My husband had the pain perdu - "lost bread", a real version of french toast. Absolutely perfect - a great way to start the day!

Come to Petunia’s famished and leaved stuffed. This restaurant has a limited menu, basically crepes, but these are the largest crepes I have ever experienced. I made the mistake of ordering a side of fries to go with it. Big mistake! One crepe was enough to serve two people easily. I would have loved to have tried the dessert crepe, but there was no room left. As of our visit in July, it appeared that they are only open until 6 in the evening. Check the times in case there was a change.

This place is so good that we went twice during our trip. We normally make it rule not to eat at the same place twice during a trip so that we can try lots of different places, but we couldn’t help ourselves. Unfortunately, they don’t take reservations. There was a line both times that we went, but I would wait no matter how long it was. The restaurant is actually a converted 1830s townhouse, and the dining room is in what used to be a double parlor.

If you only get one thing, make sure it is the Pain Perdu or "Lost Bread." It is their version of French toast, but it is unlike any other French toast that you have ever had. It is so good that you don’t need syrup! Just thinking about it makes me drool. Their crepes are overstuffed and big enough for two. Several people in line told us that everything here is good, but I’m not sure if we will ever get past the Lost Bread.

We had gotten a recommendation for this restaurant; however, it met with mixed reviews in our group. It is supposed to be known for its crepes, but those of us who ordered the crepes were not that thrilled with them. The gumbo was very good though.

I followed advice in this forum for a great breakfast location. My wife doesn't like to walk, but after having breakfast here the first morning, she insisted on returning again.

The Lost Bread (French toast) and eggs Benedict are outstanding. You have to wait in line out to the sidewalk, but it's worth the wait.
