I feel sorry for anyone who DOESN'T get to try Pollo Tropical. This place has fast-food Cuban, and they do it so well that often the line is quite long to get served here. Locals love this place, and that's why it's thriving. You can't go wrong with their chicken that is grilled to perfection and served at $2.99 for a quarter chicken. With side dishes, you can get it for $3.69. Which are my favorites? Ah, their black beans and rice are top notch. If you haven't had Cuban style yuca with its buttery garlic sauce, you might try it here. But they also have yuca fries, fried plantains and congri rice (red beans and rice cooked together). Everything is great, and apparently, they've expanded their menu to include pork and shrimp dishes as well. A drive down Highway One will lead you past three of these restaurants if you drive as far south as Homestead. But, you probably only need to drive a little past the Brickell neighborhood to find the first location, if you're coming from South Beach. It's well worth the trip, especially since it's on the way back to the airport--a good last meal before leaving town!
