Stephanie's on Newbury

Stephanie's On Newbury is located in the middle of Newbury Street. I don't know why it has such a high rating from everywhere. It is extremely crowded in this restaurant and they have both indoor and outdoor seating.

I can only get outdoor seating that night. The food selection is limited. Most of them are salads and sandwiches if you want the main course to be under $20. This is definitely a pricey restaurant and the food isn't that great. I just thought that this was no different than any other chain restaurant. I ordered a lobster pot pie, and it was not very impressive. I suggest trying some other restaurants along Newbury Street.

When I first found this restaurant 5 or 6 years ago, it was from an invitation from my Caucasian friend. And, I loved the food the prices were right around $18 to $30. Since then I had a numerous trips to this place with different friends to introduce some decent meal on Newbury Street.

However, I have to strongly advise that this is definitely for the wasps at its worst that are eager to crush another customer's mood by being loud and arrogant. But I have to address that the food and the waiting is excluded from my review as they are quite decent. But the management keeps upsetting me and other reviewers as you can see below.

Here are my incidents with the Hosts;

1. Racially biased and scoffing hosts.
2. Strong preference of 20-30 some year old girls, with designer attires over casual dressers.
3. Terrace table cover charge, $15.
4. If you don't look waspy enough, they will not give the seat first or put you on the corner table after a long wait.
5. Arrogant Host/ess often scoffing at you if you have any complaint.
6. The restaurant's owner is well known for his notorious TV commercials for Medical Law Suits that shake the state government system. Jim Sokolove, and his wife's name is Stepahnie.
7. I left a complaint regarding these humiliating experiences over the years. But the owner never returned a call.

So, if you are a white female in their 20s to 30s, with bleached blond hair and luxurious handbags, with the wispy attire with loud voices, go ahead and enjoy the food. But, please, don't get too loud drinking cocktails before 11am. But if you are black, Latino, or Asian, or older, or not so wealthy looking, be prepared to be taken like secondary people. Even if we pay the same money and have same good expectation for good food and services, they will make you feel like an outsider, not a customer. Just sit, eat, and leave, just like at McDonald's.

Or, walk away if any of them show a sign of arrogance, as there will be no way to correct this arrogance to the management. This place is truly the worst spot to witness Beantown’s notorious attitude problem.

"Charley's" on Newbury Street is better, without a cover charge of $10 to $15 during the summer, and yes, the food is good if not better. I just feel sorry for the chefs and Waiter/esses at Stephanie's for working with the wrong owner/ host/esses.

The way the food is described by the previous writer is quite accurate.

Stephanie's on Newbury is a very nice place to dine alfresco during the warm months of Boston springs and summers. It has a large patio area that is perfect for people-watching on the swanky Newbury Street as you dine. Though it is not as popular during the colder months, Stephanie's has a very nice interior that is nicely warmed by their fireplace.

During the summer months, when nobody feels much like heavy meals, Stephanie's serves the very best salads in Boston. The size of these is enough for an entire meal and then some. Though $15 to $20 sounds like a lot for lettuce, Stephanie's more than justifies this price with unusual gourmet ingredients and the huge portions. All are freshly prepared and delicious.

Stephanie's specializes in comfort food, which is perfect for dining in the colder months in Boston. The chicken pot pie will surely warm you up from any adventures in the chilly weather. Appetizers here are expensive as well but are enough to serve three people. If you go, make sure you bring a group so you don't have too much extra artichoke dip (which is very highly recommended).

If you happen to visit Newbury Street on a Sunday morning, make sure to stop by Stephanie's. Otherwise, you might miss your opportunity to enjoy one of the best brunch services in Boston. The pancakes and omelettes here are delicious, and their bar makes a fabulous mimosa. Again, it's a bit pricey but worth the few extra dollars.

After I finished walking around the shops on Newbury, I went over to Stephanie's for lunch with a local friend. I enjoyed a mixed salad with seared tuna and crunchy wontons. The food and the service were excellent, and the location can't be beat. It was a great spot to rest our feet and do a little local people-watching.

Stephanie's on Newbury offers down-home cooking for upscale prices. Located on the fashionable Newbury Street, it's hard to miss the green awning and the al fresco seating that awaits you on the outside of the restaurant. Inside, you immediately enter into a dark, warm, leather couch-filled room, lit by a warm fire, which feels like Grandpa's scotch and cigar room.

Be sure to come on an empty stomach, because Stephanie has some heavy Southern offerings. The menu varies among lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch, but my all-time favorite is the over-sized -- and should be illegal -- Stephi Burger. It's a huge sirloin hamburger topped with caramelized onions, juicy mushrooms, greasy bacon, and all the other toppings you could want. Forget the fries -- you'll have trouble finishing the burger alone! For 15 dollars, it's one of the cheaper options. My dinner favorite is the shrimp and scallop carbonara ($29.95) which, I'd have to say, you’ll need good luck finishing! After a large jumbo shrimp and a forkful of the thick carbonara noodles, you'll be stuffed! The scallops on the dish are huge and pan-seared, so if you don't like the burnt look, ask the waiter to tell the chef to not over-sear. Another favorite is the 16 oz. steak that comes with the best baked potato around -- its filled with cream and spinach and is baked perfectly!

Be sure to come on a Saturday or Sunday for their famous brunch. Call ahead to assure beating the long lines of shoppers, tourists, and locals who want to sit under the green awning along Newbury Street. My favorite dish is the Crab Cake benedict ($15) which comes with two crab cakes over english muffins which are topped with a jalapeno hollandaise sause and a mixed green salad on the side. Also good is the ahi tuna tartar (17) which comes ever so lightly cooked on the outside, but beautifully pink on the inside. Its wrapped with cucumber, avocado, sesame chili oil, spicy mayo and wasabi, and topped with crispy wontons and peanuts.

This is certainly not a place you'd want to go to everyday. The prices will leave you with a huge dent in your pocketbook, and the food will leave you with a huge bulge in your belly! Check out the website for more information. They show you all their menus (without the prices to scare you away) and their wine and dessert lists.
