Finale

I love desserts. When I first saw Finale on the Food Network, I knew I had to make that special trip to it when I visited Boston. It's a bar that serves desserts. Does it get much better than that?

I went to the Columbus Avenue location, which is conveniently located right next to the Theater District. It is the perfect post-show place to relax with friends. The night I went, New Years day, it wasn't full. I've read that reservations are recommended, but there was no need for them that day.

So, you walk in and you get a menu. The menu lists apps (prelude) and desserts. The prices were a bit higher than other places, but that's to be expected. There is a Prix Fixe menu which offers one appetizer and one dessert for $17.95. We didn't order that. There most beloved dessert is the molten cake ($10.95) and we didn't order that. They have a flight of hot chocolates (three taster sizes) and we didn't order that either. Instead, we ordered one white chocolate hot chocolate and shared the Fantasia for Two.

First the White chocolate hot chocolate. It was just under $5. It was DELICIOUS. I've never had a better hot chocolate in my life. It was the perfect combination of everything that makes hot chocolate perfect. I wish there was a way I could get some from a water fountain. To top it off, it warmed me up from the cold air outside.

The Fantasia had a medley of desserts that are meant to be shared. It was $16.95. The Fantasia consisted of small portions of:
Fresh Strawberry Tart with Vanilla Gelato: Delicious, but the crust was a bit dry for me.
White Chocolate flower petals with butter crumb cake: Nothing memorable here
Lemon Bavarian cream topped with sliced blueberries: My favorite part of the meal. The Bavarian cream was smooth and subtle.
Chocolate Baskets filled with mixed berry sauce: Again, nothing memorable.
Orange creme caramel: I love flan, so I loved this
Cinnamon rice pudding topped with peach sorbet: Maybe I'm not a big fan of rice pudding, but I definitely wasn't a big fan of this.

The staff were friendly, but I did kind of get the feeling that because we didn't order more we weren't treated as well as our wine-drinking neighbors. It didn't bother me much. It was New Years, and who really wants to work then anyway?

I thought that for our particular meal, the price was a little bit much. We had a good amount of food, but of the six options, we only really liked 2 of them. I would go again, though. It was a nice atmosphere, especially for a group of friends or a couple. The lighting is low and the tables are close. It was cool to watch the bar/dessert-tenders make your order at the bar. They kept a mirror over the bar so that you can see it from your seat.

If you have a sweet tooth, and are a confectionery lover, this is the place in Boston that you can't miss. Their best well-known signature desserts are the Creme Brulee and the Molten Chocolate. The desserts are made to order, and they have an open kitchen where you can see the dessert chef decorating your desserts. The desserts are all well decorated, delicate, and absolutely delicious.

The overall atmosphere in Finale is romantic, with very dim lights and lighted candles on tables. Finale serves mainly desserts, and only have few entries for light dinner appetizers.

There are two finale locations currently; one in downtown, Columbus Ave, and one in Harvard Square. They're opening another one in Coolidge Corner soon. This place is very crowded on weekend nights, and the wait usually take at least 30 minutes. My recommendation is if you're sure you're going on a weekend night, call in and reserve a table.

Finale has an open bar and bakery, where you can hang out while waiting for a table. The bakery offers a variety of miniature desserts and cakes; they have a mini creme brulee for take away, but for the best indulgence experience, you'll have to sit down and enjoy it when the creme brulee is freshly burned, warm, and crispy.

For decadent desserts and to satisfy your sweet tooth, come to Finale. There are two locations: one in the back bay area, and the other in Harvard Square on Dunster Street. This is a perfect place for a first date or for a small group of friends.

I've never eaten any of its prelude offerings -- I've only gone for dessert -- but from what I've seen, the salads, gourmet pizzas, and other dishes look very delicious and are well presented.

They have an extensive wine list, and for their desserts, they offer wine pairings that compliment the desserts. If wine is not your thing, they offer various coffees and espressos. The dessert menu varies from season to season, but you can be sure to find something to fit your fancy! My favorite is the creme brulee. It comes in a large portion with fresh berries on top. It’s so pretty that I always hate to crack the top, but after a bite, its worth it! Also another fave is the Molten Chocolate dish which has the gooiest, warmest, most delightful center. The dessert platters run anywhere from $8 to $18.

They also offer desserts to take home -- anything from just a slice of cake to a whole tiramisu cake. Everything here is made to perfection!

This is not your usual Saturday night restaurant in Boston. This is heaven on a plate. An artistic sojourn into the land of desserts. If you have ever browsed through Bon Appetit or the Cordon Bleu Dessert Book and seen the majestical creations with the candy plumes of spun sugar and the chocolate tower of dark and white chocolate then you have envisioned a dessert at Finales. Boston laughed and said they could never make a go of just desserts but little did they know how women crave such confections.

These imaginative delights are not inexpensive but where else could you find on one plate " molten chocolate cake, orange chocolate tartlet, hazelnut bavarian pyramid..."? That is just the beginning and the end of our waistlines ladies. This is a do not miss, put on the top of your list place that will have you coming back after the theatre, after a great dinner or better yet, skip the dinner and cozy up with a friend, a pot of tea and one of these beautiful, mouth watering delights.
