Big Piece of Granite

Enchanted Rock State Park was a great place to visit. We made it a day trip during our visit to San Antonio. They have several picnic tables to bring a lunch and make a whole day out of it. The most popular thing to do is to walk up the big rock. It is huge but is very manageable. We had a group of four and easily made it to the top within 30 minutes and a couple of us are not in very good shape. We had to take a few breaks, but the view is wonderful and is worth taking the time to get a good look and take several photos. There are also a couple of other outcroppings to walk up and these are each worth taking the time to get to the top although their climb is a little steeper.
Also, while we were there, we went on most of the hiking trails around the big rock. All of these were very manageable. There were several people out rocking climbing on the backside of the big rock, and it was very interesting to see them work with such skill.
Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the trip and learning the geology behind it. I recommend if you are in the area to take a trip to Enchanted Rock and enjoy exploring the outdoors.

Enchanted rock is a state park in hill country, Texas. So far, it is hands-down the most beautiful state park I have ever been to, not to mention it is now a very special place to me. It has endless, gorgeous views and an array of things to do.

E-rock provided many outdoor activities like primitive camping, rock climbing, hiking, backpacking, picnicking, bird watching, geological studying, and star gazing. It's a great place for the outdoor man and woman, and it is also located just around 30 minutes from Fredricksburg; a cute, little, authentic German town.

It is filled with lots of history and culture (and a pay phone to call friends and family and tell them you were engaged). While we were there, we climbed to the top of this hill and sat and enjoyed the breathtaking view. We talked, he proposed, and then we spent a few more hours hiking and viewing the state park. It will definitely be a place we go back too.

Enchanted Rock State Park

The truly massive dome of solid pink granite is said to be the site of human sacrifices made by Indian tribes that feared to set foot on it. Indians thought that there were ghost fires flickering on the crest on moonlit nights, but there are shallow depressions on the dome that collect dew and reflect moonlight. Visitation is being limited to protect the area from soil compacting. Some very rare trees and other vegetation are becoming endangered.

Once the park reaches capacity during heavy use periods it will temporarily close for the day and then reopen at 5pm for those who have camping reservations. Call 915/247-3903 for information and reservations. There is a small admission charge. The reason this place is so fascinating is that the pink granite dome is so "suddenly there" as if it just landed from outer space or something. See it when the weather is not too hot, though, or be cooked.
