The Mighty Mango

Tucked behind a mini-mall in south Calgary, this hidden gem is a good, inexpensive place to have some great Chinese food without breaking your budget.

While the exterior screams "80's", the interior is classy and comfortable, with around 15 tables and a cozy atmosphere. Service is quick and efficient, and the friendly waitresses will bring you cold water before taking your drink order.

You have two choices during lunchtime at the Mighty Mango - you can order off of the extensive menu, or order the "lunch special". The lunch special includes one meat and chow mein or rice for $5.99, or two meats for $7.99. I opted to order off the menu, since I had a $11.00 coupon, but the lunch specials looked great.

We ordered the Pineapple Sweet and Sour Chicken along with a Three Seafood, Meat, and Tofu Hot Pot. The food was served very quickly and was amazingly fresh. The $11.95 hot pot came out still steaming, and the portions were excellent. The tofu was crisp but soft, with an excellent ginger-garlic sauce. The hot pot included chopped bok choy, baby corn, celery, broccoli, green onions, carrots, and water chestnuts, mixed in with sliced BBQ pork, calamari, shrimp, and scallops. The $10.95 dish of sweet and sour chicken was almost searingly hot, fresh out of the deep fryer. The sauce was sweet, but not overwhelmingly so. A side dish of rice accompanied our meal.

The food was very high quality, and the prices don't reflect that. Here, the low prices have no influence on the quality of the food, and you can have a delicious dinner for two for less than $25.00.

The Mighty Mango is open daily from 11:00 AM until 9:00 PM, and later on weekends. The restaurant is located near Shawnessy light rail station, across Macleod Trail in the district of Midnapore. Walking here would be tough from the light rail station, so take a city bus from there or from where you are in the city. To get here by car from downtown, take Macleod Trail south to the southern end of Calgary, and turn left onto Midnapore Drive, then another left onto Bannister Road. Go around the mini-mall, which faces the highway. It's in the center of the mini-mall, next to the Dixon Public House. There is ample parking available.

The Mighty Mango participates in the Entertainment Coupon Book. If you have the book, come on in for a two for one dinner.
