As one might expect, there is some excellent Japanese available in Liberdade, the world’s largest Japanese community outside of Japan. This wonderful Japanese restaurant is located in the heart of Liberdade on Rua Tomas Gonzaga (follow Rua Conselheiro Furtado south from Praca de Se, it's a small side street off to the west that did not appear on our map). It is deserving of the praise it receives in a couple of the major travel guides. We went there for lunch, and for $12 a person, were served a lunch special that included sushi, tsukemono, miso soup, a smoked fish, and a few other items. Everything was delicious. Menus are available in English, the staff speaks some English in addition to Portuguese and Japanese and is very accommodating.
Their website, which is all in Portuguese, is
